Chagford Barn

Case Study Chagford Barn Conversion Pellet boilers

Boiler: Two Windhager Biowins
Output: 52kw
Fuel: Pellet
Fuel Storage capacity: 9 Tonnes
Estimated Fuel Requirement: 9 Tonnes

This site consisted of two properties with the new boiler house sited against the barn conversion.A system is required to heat the main house with heating and hot water and the Holiday unit with under floor heating and hot water. There may be as many as 4-6 people at one time requiring hot water in the Cottage.

Boiler and system

Based on our design, the total heat load for both units is 50kW for which we installed two 26kw Windhager pellet boilers.

We supplied a 250litre Megaflow un-vented indirect cylinder in boiler room to provide hot water to cottage only allowing for 4-6 people.

Fuel will be stored in a fabricated silo by customer above boiler room of circa 16-24m3 and will be automatically extracted and transferred to the boiler by a suction system. This will provide sufficient storage for two loads per year if boiler(s) are used to maximum capacity all year round.

The wood boiler and Megaflow hot water cylinder shall be installed and controlled by own built in temperature and time systems allowing for the following circuits

a) Holiday unit - one under-floor, one hot water

b) Main house – one radiator, one hot water

Annually the estimate kWh for this site has been estimated at 44,800 kWh per year. We think that this has not taken in to consideration the excess hot water demands if holiday guest use takes place in the future. The boiler would use approximately 9 tonnes of wood pellet (perhaps 1 delivery per year in all) to supply the currently estimated full current heating demand.

9 Tonnes of 6mm pellets can be stored in one load.

This project was funded by the customer as an Eco holiday rental business with substantially low fuel costs against heating oil or LPG.
